Relieve Your Dog’s Ailments by Using CBD

Few things are worse for pet owners than seeing their dog in any kind of distress. Fortunately, there are ways outside of traditional pharmaceuticals that can help, and without all the side effects. More and more studies confirm what pet owners using CBD to treat their dogs have known for a while now – CBD is a legitimate avenue for relief from a variety of ailments.

For example, this study from 2018 focused on dogs with osteoarthritis and how CBD was used to treat their pain. The result was that there were no observable side effects and that after taking CBD, the dogs in the study showed “a significant decrease in pain and increase in activity with CBD oil.”

Let’s look at some common health issues affecting dogs and how CBD can be used to provide relief.

Separation Anxiety

It’s a common scenario for pet owners: You spend a day at work or you’re out for multiple hours and upon your return home, your furry family members go berserk, smothering you with affection because they’ve missed you. But what if your away time becomes a source of distress for your pet? Separation anxiety is among the most common issues pet owners deal with, often treating them with drugs and behavior therapy.

Do they drool excessively, pant or chew on things other than their chew toys when you’re away? Maybe they go potty in the house or bark and howl? Some dogs will pace for hours to deal with the anxiety induced by your absence or they might try to escape and find you. The ASPCA says on its website that medication can be “very helpful, especially for severe cases of separation anxiety.”

If you’re trying to avoid giving your dog pharmaceuticals, consider that CBD has been shown to help reduce anxiety. According to this study, researchers concluded that “the results from laboratory animals, healthy volunteers, and patients with anxiety disorders support the proposition of CBD as a new drug with anxiolytic properties.”

Allergies

If you suffer from allergies, you know how uncomfortable it can be. Dogs are equally annoyed and can even harm themselves if they scratch at an itch obsessively when allergies get them down. They’re just miserable and they probably aren’t sleeping well. Apoquel is one of the most popular medications prescribed by veterinarians to treat seasonal allergies. With your veterinarian’s recommendation, you can also go with an over-the-counter medication like Zyrtec, Benadryl or Claritin. Or you can go the holistic route and choose CBD.

Because all mammals have an endocannabinoid system, CBD can trigger an anti-inflammatory response that can soothe your pet dealing with allergies. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has a study listed on its site titled “Cannabinoids as novel anti-inflammation drugs” that says the following: “Cannabinoids are potent anti-inflammatory agents and they exert their effects through induction of apoptosis, inhibition of cell proliferation, suppression of cytokine production and induction of T-regulatory cells (Tregs).”

That’s a scientific mouthful, but it is essentially saying CBD can take some of the sting out of the side effects of allergies.

Itching

While allergies are often associated with itching, your dog might be experiencing the urge to scratch because of parasites, cold and dry weather and yeast infection. Regardless of the reason for the itch, your dog is going to want to scratch and scratch in an effort to alleviate the nuisance, and that leads to inflammation and potentially wounds. Just as the CBD assists in knocking down the inflammation caused by allergies, it can also assist your dog’s itching problems associated with other types of issues.

Dogs can also experience internal issues caused by intestinal parasites. These parasites can cause you dog to lose weight and seem listless, but also suffer nausea and vomiting. The pharmaceuticals used to kill the parasites can also cause nausea. Fortunately, CBD is known to calm the stomachs of dogs, reducing the nausea that can lead to vomiting.
