What ingredients are in your Senior Support formula?

Being a “senior dog” is relative to the dog’s breed, but also its physical wellness. Small dogs that have relatively long lifespans compared to giant breeds hit the “senior” designation at around 10-12 years of age, while medium-size dogs welcome that moniker at age 8 or 9. Larger dogs hit the senior milestone perhaps as early as 6.

Reaching the golden years isn’t without its challenges. Some senior dogs don’t handle stress as well as they once did. It’s not uncommon for their hearing to go bad, and that once keen sense of vision begins to fade. They also have a tougher time regulating their temperature. One of the big aging milestones you’ll really notice is that the pup that once had limitless energy is now having mobility issues due to sore joints and seems content to sit still or show signs of difficulty getting up.

At PetSoothe, we’ve taken some of these elder ailments into account in developing our Senior Support salmon and oatmeal CDB treats for senior dogs. These treats support healthy mobility, healthy digestion and brain function. The following are the key ingredients for offering these levels of support.

Salmon Oil

Bringing salmon oil into the mix is essential, as fish oil is one of the most popular products sought out by pet owners. You’ve likely heard of healthy fat, which is the type of fat bodies use for energy, protecting organs and supporting cell growth. Fish oil contains healthy fat compounds called docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) fatty acids, which are collectively referred to as Omega 3 fatty acids.

Among the list of potential benefits pets could gain from consumption of salmon oil includes lower triglyceride (harmful cholesterol) levels, improved cognitive function, improve heart health, slow kidney disease, improve skin conditions and aid arthritic joints.

Glucosamine

It’s estimated that roughly one in five dogs will develop a joint issue at some point in their lives, though it’s most seen in senior dogs. One of the keys to a happy life is mobility, which is why we have included glucosamine in our Senior Support CBD treats.

Glucosamine is one of the most common supplements used to support dogs with osteoarthritis. It is a naturally occurring compound that is known as a “chondroprotective agent” used for its potential in alleviating pain related to joint problems. Glucosamine has also been used to intervene and slow the onset of arthritis.

Probiotics
Probiotics are bacteria in the gut that promote health. Billions of them live in your dog’s gut and help them fight infection, digest food and process nutrients. Furthermore, probiotics help to make the immune system do its job.

If you’ve taken probiotics for your own potential health benefits, you might have gotten them from a dairy product, such as yogurt. Dairy products are a leading cause of food intolerance in canines, which is why it’s important that at PetSoothe, we use lactose-free probiotics in Senior Support.

Turmeric
A doctor at the Harvard-affiliated Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases referred to inflammation as the “smolder process that injures your tissues, joints, and blood vessels.” Supporting healthy inflammation in a natural way includes using turmeric, which is a spice commonly used in Indian food. And while you might enjoy it in your tikka masala, it’s more and more commonly being used for its potential to fight inflammation.

Turmeric is often referred to as a “natural superfood,” and it’s admired as much for its medicinal properties as it is for its taste. While there are a host of potential benefits cited in consuming turmeric, the top one is supporting healthy inflammation levels. It’s believed that the compound in turmeric called curcumin is where this spice gets its ability to perform its superfood powers.
