When does CBD start to work?

CBD can start working in as few as 30 minutes after being administered. In the best-case scenario, some dogs and cats in obvious pain will relax and appear to feel better within 30 minutes of taking the supplement.

It will take a few days for your pet’s system to adjust to the CBD, which is why it’s recommended to introduce it in lower doses. After three to five days, you can start to increase the dosage by 1 milligram to 2 milligrams per pound of body weight and continue to do so until you reach the maximum recommended dosage or the peak of symptom relief from your pet. Should your pet appear too lethargic after taking CBD, this is probably a sign that they are still adjusting to the supplement or they’ve reached their dosage peak. It’s important to note that a small amount of lethargy is not out of the ordinary and perhaps even expected, but should your pet seem “out of it,” then you’ve probably ramped up the dosage too fast.

If you’re worried about your dog becoming dependent on CBD, keep in mind that the World Health Organization’s report on the impact of CBD on humans says there is no indication that CBD use can lead to abuse or dependency of the supplement. Also, broad spectrum CBD oil contains 0% THC, so there is no way for your dog to experience a psychoactive “high” while using this product.

Few things are worse for pet owners than seeing their dog in any kind of distress. Fortunately, there are ways outside of traditional pharmaceuticals that can help, and without all the side effects. More and more studies confirm what pet owners using CBD to treat their dogs have known for a while now – CBD is a legitimate avenue for relief from a variety of ailments.

For example, this study from 2018 focused on dogs with osteoarthritis and how CBD was used to treat their pain. The result was that there were no observable side effects and that after taking CBD, the dogs in the study showed “a significant decrease in pain and increase in activity with CBD oil.”
