All Questions & Answers
At PetSoothe, we like to approach things with knowledge and understand there is a learning curve when it comes to understanding the ins and outs of CBD in the United States.
Let’s start with a good foundation of what CBD is and why it’s safe for your dog to use.
CBD is the acronym for cannabidiol, which is a substance discovered in cannabis plants in 1940. CBD is just one of the 120-plus cannabinoids that have been discovered thus far. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in cannabis, but CBD gets a lot of attention due to its medicinal benefits. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD does not produce psychoactive effects when consumed.
Upon first glance it’s easy to think that hemp seed oil is the same as CBD oil because they both come from the hemp plant. However, the major distinction is that hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the plant, whereas CBD oil is derived from the raw plant itself. A similarity that hemp seed oil and CBD oil share is they both contain less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. And while both might contain trace amounts of THC, there is not enough present to produce a “high.”
Hemp Seed Oil
Rich in omega fatty acids, hemp seed oil (also known as hemp oil) is taken from the seeds of the cannabis sativa plant. Specifically, most hemp seed oil is “cold pressed” out of the seeds. This product is popular because it also contains nutrients, such as vitamin C, iron, B vitamins, calcium and gamma linolenic acid.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported in 2018 that it had evaluated three generally recognized as safe (GRAS) notices for hemp seed-derived food ingredients. These include hulled hemp seed, hemp seed protein powder and hemp seed oil. It’s important to note that these hemp products do not contain CBD.
- Hemp Oil Uses
Because hemp oil has such great nutritional value, it has been a popular additive to foods. For example, the omega 3 fatty acids have been linked to good brain and heart health. The gamma linolenic acid is known for its help in easing the symptoms women feel with PMS, but it’s also been linked to healthier skin. Finally, the omega-9 found in hemp has been used for balancing cholesterol levels.
Yet another important distinction between hemp oil and CBD is that hemp oil does not contain CBD or terpenes, which are the chemical compounds in the plant that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which dogs and humans both have.
CBD Oil
Rather than being sourced from hemp seeds, CBD oil comes from the cannabis leaves, flowers and stems/stalks. Another big distinction between hemp oil and CBD oil is that hemp oil doesn’t contain terpenes. While terpenes are found in plants other than cannabis (there are thought to be 20,000-plus different types of terpenes), it’s a major component in CBD oil. Terpenes often have strong fragrance. For example, when you smell a pine tree, you’re smelling a terpene called linene. And while the scent of terpenes might have a calming effect, they are also known for something called the “entourage effect,” which has to do with the relationship terpenes have with other healthful compounds found in CBD and how a synergy is created when terpenes are consumed with the other components of CBD.
There are a couple different ways to extract the oil from the plant, one of the most popular being a multi-step CO2 extraction method.
- CBD Oil Uses
The biggest headlines regarding the medicinal uses of CBD revolves around its effectiveness in treating epilepsy in children. The FDA has even approved Epidiolex, a drug containing a purified form of CBD, for treating seizures. However, the vast majority of CBD users are seeking relief from anxiety, depression, migraines, pain and inflammation and a host of other disorders.
There is still a lot to learn about CBD and how it positively impacts the physiology of those taking it. At PetSoothe, our products are aimed at promoting the health of dogs. As more reports and lab results are published, we’ll share them in this space, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out our products we currently have available.
The Farm Bill Act of 2018 was signed into law on December 20, 2018. An important aspect of this bill is that it prompted the removal of hemp from the definition of marijuana in the Controlled Substances Act. The Farm Bill makes hemp federally legal, which means CDB that comes from hemp is federally legal, but if CBD is derived from marijuana, it is not federally legal.
CBD producers often have to remind the public that their products don’t produce a psychoactive effect, which is what THC is responsible for in marijuana use. And while House Bill 3884, aimed at decriminalizing marijuana, made headlines in December 2020 when it passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, it does not directly impact CBD usage or the study of it. It is, however, a signal that CBD legislation already introduced could be one step closer to getting approved in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In September 2020 House Bill 8179 was introduced, seeking to make it federally legal to use CBD in supplements. Better known as the “Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2020,” its passage could pave the way for many more positive steps forward for this complex yet promising cannabinoid compound.
While CBD products are legal in many states, they aren’t federally legal, which has some critics saying that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the agency in charge of overseeing veterinary drugs, is throwing “cold water on a hot market.”
If passed, the bill will make it federally legal to use CBD as a dietary ingredient in a dietary supplement. The FDA noted on its website in October that there is “significant interest in the development of therapies and other consumer products derived from cannabis and its components, including cannabidiol (CBD).” The agency has also said it is working to answer questions about the science, safety and quality of products containing cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds, particularly CBD.
The agency finally made a positive move in regard to CBD in June 2020 when it approved Epidiolex, a CBD-containing drug used for controlling seizures.
Douglas Throckmorton, M.D., deputy center director for regulatory programs in the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said the FDA is committed to supporting “rigorous scientific research on the potential medical uses of cannabis-derived products and working with product developers who are interested in bringing patients safe and effective, high-quality products.”
The FDA has also come down on CBD producers, issuing warning letters in November 2019 to 15 companies for “illegally selling products containing cannabidiol in ways that violate the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.”
FDA Update
On Oct. 30, 2020, the FDA offered technical comments and some amendments to the bill, noting that simply because it was making recommendations, it was not endorsing the bill. The most notable amendment would require CBD producers and distributors to ensure their product is safe through new dietary ingredient notifications, also known as NDINs, and provide a limit the amount of CBD in their recommended dosages. Pet owners can get behind this, no doubt, because it would help to ensure the products being advertised as CBD are indeed safe to use.

We know CBD is safe for dogs because all vertebrate animals, just like us humans, have the same endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex cell-signaling system first identified in the early 1990s and it is what processes CBD in the body. While researchers are still studying the ECS, they have found links to how it regulates important life functions, including memory, sleep, appetite and mood.
CBD and ECS receptors are found throughout the body of you and your pets, and they interact to establish a bridge between the body and mind. There are two endocannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. The CB1 receptors are found mostly in the nervous system, whereas CB2 receptors are found in immune cells in the peripheral nervous system. When products such as CBD oil are ingested, they interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, stimulating the desired effects.
How does the ECS work?
Basically, all vertebrate animals have an ECS, which means CBD and ECS receptors found throughout the body interact to establish a bridge between the body and mind. If that sounds too much like fantasy pseudo-science, look at what some of the brightest scientific minds have to say about it in a recent a piece published by the Harvard Medical School’s Harvard Health Publishing site. The use of CBD has gone well beyond the holistic enthusiasts, entering modern medicine as a viable treatment for humans and pets.
The Down low on ECS Receptors
To learn more about how CBD impacts humans and pets, we have to look more closely at the receptors. Within every ECS system there are two CBD receptor types: CB1 and CB2. According to a study published by the Mayo Clinic, CB1 receptors are “highly expressed” in the central nervous system, which includes the several areas of the brain, but are also found in smooth muscle tissue. The CB2 receptors are found in immune cells, which circulate throughout the body in the bloodstream.
One of the most common reasons humans take CBD is to treat chronic pain, particularly, chronic inflammatory pain. It’s also a top reason pet owners use it on their aching dogs, cats and any other vertebrate pet. Studies have indicated that activating the receptors through the introduction of CBD plays a role in the anti-inflammatory process, which suppresses the sensation of pain. In fact, the CB2 receptor activation has proven to reduce inflammation, so it’s not just masking the pain, it’s treating the root cause of it.
Cytokines? Fortunately, You and Your Pet Have Them
The science behind what’s actually happening in pet and human CB1 and CB2 receptors can get quite complex because the terminology is not something anyone outside of a scientific lab would normally experience. But if there is one element to this that you need to know about, it’s cytokines.
Cureus, an open access medical journal, published an article in September 2020, explaining that cytokines are proteins released by cells, which influences cell to cell communication in immune responses. In the case of inflammation, the CBD interacts with the CB2 receptors and helps move cytokines to the site of the inflammation/infection or trauma.

What are the different types of CBD?
CBD products are hitting the market en masse and there are many consumers new to the products, whether it’s for their own consumption or for that of their pets, and there is no shortage of questions that need to be answered. One of the more common inquiries is: “What’s the difference between full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD and CBD isolate?”
The short answer is that the compounds contained in full and broad spectrum differ only a very little, but in important ways. However, CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD, wherein all the other cannabis compounds are stripped out. It doesn’t even contain terpenes, which means it doesn’t have a smell or taste.
Let’s take a look at each of these and establish the differences, beginning with CBD isolate.
CBD Isolate
The process of refining CBD to an isolate involves just a few, yet complex steps. Most manufacturers use CO2 or ethanol to extract the CBD. With CO2 extraction, considered one of the more high-tech methods, the cannabis is placed in a chamber under extremely high carbon dioxide pressure and also at a very low temperature. With ethanol, considered easier and less costly, it is used as a solvent to extract the CBD from the flowers and other parts of the cannabis.
Rather than containing a small dosage (less than 0.3%) of THC, as the full spectrum variety does, the CBD isolate has no THC. This is a bonus for those who want zero THC in their system. The disadvantage (to some) is that without the terpenes and essential oils and the trace amount of THC, isolate lacks the “entourage effect,” which is the often-stated health advantage found in full and broad-spectrum CBD.
Broad Spectrum CBD
Broad spectrum CBD is derived from an extraction process that most often uses super chilled butane or propane, which helps to retain the terpenes and cannabinoids. While this process removes the hemp plant’s impurities, it also seeks to remove almost all traces of the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Proponents of broad-spectrum CBD prefer to leverage the CBD “entourage effect” while omitting any traces of THC. It is important to note, however, that any remaining amounts of THC after the extraction process would in fact be just that, traces of CBD, which cannot cause any psychotic affects.
Full Spectrum CBD
Full-spectrum CBD is considered the preferred extraction method of CBD because it retains the most amount of naturally occurring phytochemicals from the hemp plant, creating an “entourage effect” together with the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. The full spectrum extraction process retains the highest number of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, which is a reason why some consider it the preferred CBD product. It also includes trace amounts of THC and THCA (less than .03% combined). Having that little amount of THC in the oil will not produce the “high” that recreational marijuana users experience, but instead will work together with the cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids to produce an “entourage effect,” which proponents believe is more effective than any other type of extraction available.
PetSoothe is proud to use full spectrum CBD, and our supplier even goes one step further by taking the oil through a distillation process that further refines the CBD oil. Distillation involves gently heating the oil so the lipids, fats and waxes, which are naturally occurring in the cannabis plant, are separated from the oil. Once distilled, the oil is more refined and definitely purer.

Always follow the manufacturer's dosing recommendations, as they will differ per brand.
Because CBD oil extraction processes differ and the profile of the plants can also differ, there will not be the same concentrations of CBD in every brand. It’s for these reasons that you should follow the instructions rather than use the same dosages from one brand to the next.
Typical doses for dogs are roughly 1-5MG of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight.
CBD can start working in as few as 30 minutes after being administered. In the best-case scenario, some dogs and cats in obvious pain will relax and appear to feel better within 30 minutes of taking the supplement.
It will take a few days for your pet’s system to adjust to the CBD, which is why it’s recommended to introduce it in lower doses. After three to five days, you can start to increase the dosage by 1 milligram to 2 milligrams per pound of body weight and continue to do so until you reach the maximum recommended dosage or the peak of symptom relief from your pet. Should your pet appear too lethargic after taking CBD, this is probably a sign that they are still adjusting to the supplement or they’ve reached their dosage peak. It’s important to note that a small amount of lethargy is not out of the ordinary and perhaps even expected, but should your pet seem “out of it,” then you’ve probably ramped up the dosage too fast.
If you’re worried about your dog becoming dependent on CBD, keep in mind that the World Health Organization’s report on the impact of CBD on humans says there is no indication that CBD use can lead to abuse or dependency of the supplement. Also, broad spectrum CBD oil contains 0% THC, so there is no way for your dog to experience a psychoactive “high” while using this product.
Use Quality CBD Products
Before you begin dosing your dog with CBD, seek out trusted, high-quality forms of it that are produced by vetted companies with a history of success behind their products. If you’re purchasing from the right producers, the dosing guidelines should be printed on the side of the packaging or on a pamphlet within.
At PetSoothe, we’re committed to using the finest CBD oils in our products and we always offer dosing guidelines with our products. Reach out to us today and we’ll further explain our approach to producing top-quality that makes your dog’s life the best it can be.
Few things are worse for pet owners than seeing their dog in any kind of distress. Fortunately, there are ways outside of traditional pharmaceuticals that can help, and without all the side effects. More and more studies confirm what pet owners using CBD to treat their dogs have known for a while now – CBD is a legitimate avenue for relief from a variety of ailments.
For example, this study from 2018 focused on dogs with osteoarthritis and how CBD was used to treat their pain. The result was that there were no observable side effects and that after taking CBD, the dogs in the study showed “a significant decrease in pain and increase in activity with CBD oil.”
Let’s look at some common health issues affecting dogs and how CBD can be used to provide relief.
Separation Anxiety
It’s a common scenario for pet owners: You spend a day at work or you’re out for multiple hours and upon your return home, your furry family members go berserk, smothering you with affection because they’ve missed you. But what if your away time becomes a source of distress for your pet? Separation anxiety is among the most common issues pet owners deal with, often treating them with drugs and behavior therapy.
Do they drool excessively, pant or chew on things other than their chew toys when you’re away? Maybe they go potty in the house or bark and howl? Some dogs will pace for hours to deal with the anxiety induced by your absence or they might try to escape and find you. The ASPCA says on its website that medication can be “very helpful, especially for severe cases of separation anxiety.”
If you’re trying to avoid giving your dog pharmaceuticals, consider that CBD has been shown to help reduce anxiety. According to this study, researchers concluded that “the results from laboratory animals, healthy volunteers, and patients with anxiety disorders support the proposition of CBD as a new drug with anxiolytic properties.”
Allergies
If you suffer from allergies, you know how uncomfortable it can be. Dogs are equally annoyed and can even harm themselves if they scratch at an itch obsessively when allergies get them down. They’re just miserable and they probably aren’t sleeping well. Apoquel is one of the most popular medications prescribed by veterinarians to treat seasonal allergies. With your veterinarian’s recommendation, you can also go with an over-the-counter medication like Zyrtec, Benadryl or Claritin. Or you can go the holistic route and choose CBD.
Because all mammals have an endocannabinoid system, CBD can trigger an anti-inflammatory response that can soothe your pet dealing with allergies. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has a study listed on its site titled “Cannabinoids as novel anti-inflammation drugs” that says the following: “Cannabinoids are potent anti-inflammatory agents and they exert their effects through induction of apoptosis, inhibition of cell proliferation, suppression of cytokine production and induction of T-regulatory cells (Tregs).”
That’s a scientific mouthful, but it is essentially saying CBD can take some of the sting out of the side effects of allergies.
Itching
While allergies are often associated with itching, your dog might be experiencing the urge to scratch because of parasites, cold and dry weather and yeast infection. Regardless of the reason for the itch, your dog is going to want to scratch and scratch in an effort to alleviate the nuisance, and that leads to inflammation and potentially wounds. Just as the CBD assists in knocking down the inflammation caused by allergies, it can also assist your dog’s itching problems associated with other types of issues.
Dogs can also experience internal issues caused by intestinal parasites. These parasites can cause you dog to lose weight and seem listless, but also suffer nausea and vomiting. The pharmaceuticals used to kill the parasites can also cause nausea. Fortunately, CBD is known to calm the stomachs of dogs, reducing the nausea that can lead to vomiting.
People give their dogs CBD for other conditions as well. Talk to your vet or research if CBD is right for your dog. At PetSoothe, we’re focused on providing safe avenues for treating ailments that cause you dog’s distress. Contact us and find out more about our products and how they can help improve your pet’s quality of life.
Being highly social animals, dogs are capable of feeling lonely. Even before humans began shaping canine evolution, these descendants of wild wolves ran in packs – hunted, played and nurtured each other. As pets, dogs see humans as part of their pack and the bonds established are quite intense, to the point that when we have to leave them behind for work or vacation, sometimes leading to separation anxiety. This can be quite unpleasant for our furry friends.
While some dogs will simply sleep while their human family is away, others working through the anxiety might manifest in scratching at the door, tearing a couch apart or constantly barking, howling and annoying neighbors. Otherwise, potty trained dogs might also urinate or defecate in the home as a result of separation anxiety.
Common separation anxiety behaviors:
- Depression
- Anxiousness

Addressing Anxiety
Have you ever noticed that when you leave your house without telling your dog that you’ll “be right back,” that they exhibit heightened levels of anxiety? Try going through a routine as you’re leaving. For example, crouch down and calmly tell your dog as you stroke them that you’re leaving but will return. You can also tell them to “hold the fort” or something with a sense of purpose. Veterinarians will typically tell you to shy away from using such phrases as “I will miss you so much” or other emotional pleas, as they can do further damage or create further anxiety.
Using the same language helps, as dogs respond well to repetition. Instead of wondering why you disappeared, there’s a good chance your dog will become accustomed to your words when leaving and know that you indeed will return.
Another behavioral approach is to give your dog something they love right before you leave. Try freezing peanut butter in a Kong (or any toy that is designed to hold treats) or put treats in a puzzle toy that keeps your dog occupied while you’re out. Instead of having a negative association to your absence, they will see the positive in it. This could be a favorite toy, or it could be a shirt you’ve worn that has your scent on it.
Another idea is to walk or exercise your dog right before you go, as this will make them a little tired and more likely to sleep while you’re gone. Dogs that are not allowed to expend their vast amounts of energy are at risk for using it in unpleasant ways, especially when your absence causes anxiety. A brisk walk before an anxiety-triggering event is a proactive way to keep the bad behaviors to a minimum.
Some dog owners have had success leaving on a radio or television for familiar sounds or noises, which can help calm your dog. And for puppies, a warm water bottle or towel with a toy or ticking clock can comfort them.
Training Tips for Reduced Anxiety
Desensitizing your dog to your leaving requires some gradual training. Practice leaving for a few minutes at a time and increase the length of absence until you see your dog become more comfortable. You are basically taking their mindset of “my human friend is leaving and will never return,” to a more relaxed “my human friend is going out for a while but will return.” A relaxed dog is more likely to sleep while you’re out rather than work through anxiety with destructive behavior.
Highly observant dogs will pick up on cues that you’re leaving and begin to react. For example, packing a suitcase can trigger them, because they associate the suitcase with your absence. The goal here is to not make a big deal out of the fact that you’re about to depart, because it’s basically antagonizing them and can make the anxiety worse.

Humans are more similar to dogs than you might think. We are all wired differently and we all have our own personalities, including our own levels of anxiety. And for dogs and for people, different environmental triggers can increase or decrease our level of anxiety.
Let’s look at some of the common causes of anxiety and why you would want to consider giving your dog a sedative.
High Energy
Let’s face it. Some dogs just have too much energy. No matter how much they play or exercise, their endless enthusiasm never seems to run out. While that can be great for marathoners or dog sled contests, too much energy in a normal home can become dangerous and manifest itself as anxiety if all that high energy cannot be burned off. As many mothers have said, “there’s a time and a place for everything” and sometimes too much of something is not necessarily a good thing. For those dogs where exercise and other tricks have not worked or who are just super anxious, sometimes giving them a sedative can help to lessen unwanted behavior and lift your dog’s spirits.
Pain Management
Many times, dogs can be in pain and thereby an outcome of this is exhibited by displaying anxious behavior. This pain can be from a specific accident or condition they have or perhaps it is from constant pain that they are experiencing that we are unaware of. The easier diagnosis is when your dog had surgery or injured themselves or is having mobility issues. This type of pain is easier to identify in your dog because we can see it clearly. It can be the lessor known internal issues that are causing your dog pain, which is much more difficult to identify. Sometimes these pains manifest themselves by showing minor or no symptoms at all. For example, your dog may get a crusty nose because they are having digestive issues. Or a dog can have internal inflammation or morning stiffness that can indicate mobility issues. Sometimes a dog with this type of pain will be fine for part of the day, but then experience more pain later and become irritable or cranky.
Aggressive behavior
Sometimes dog owners have the challenging task of owning an aggressive dog. Aggression in dogs can be caused by a traumatic experience, underlying and sometimes undetected pain, or just plain personality. Most aggressive dogs display a level of anxiety because their aggression is masking their fear or condition. Regardless of the cause of the aggression, controlling and making sure your dog is happy can be challenging to say the least. Strong leash pulling, unprovoked attacks on humans or other dogs and just plain unruliness are behaviors that no dog owner wants to see their pet exhibit.
Environmental Triggers
Environmental triggers can also cause anxiety in dogs. Examples of this include 4th of July fireworks, a car ride to the vet, a thunderstorm, separation anxiety, a dog fight and anything else that can cause stress in your dog. The better we understand our dog the better we can anticipate such environmental triggers, but there is no way to remove all triggers or anticipate every trigger for your dog.
Things to try before giving a sedative
Before giving your dog a sedative to help address their anxiety, there are a few things you can consider trying first.
Exercise your dog
A tired dog is often the best kind of dog but getting them to that state is not always possible. If you have the time and luxury to run or play with your dog, enough to tire them out, that can sometimes help to lessen the unwanted behavior you are trying to remove. Making sure your dog is well exercised every day can help to reduce excess energy levels and also keep your dog less anxious. And if you don’t have time, consider hiring a dog walker or sending your dog to daycare.
Make your dog’s environment comfortable
Try making your dog’s environment more comfortable by removing any triggers that can cause them anxiety. This can be things like open windows, loud noises, other dogs or people and more. While we cannot control the unexpected, we can try to do our part to create a comfortable environment where our dogs sleep or spend the most time. You can also try to add soft touches where you can. For example, consider keeping the lights low, adding low-key music, making sure your dog has their favorite bed, pillow, toy or lovie, and anything else that you know can ease your dog’s anxiety.
Give your dog a sedative
When you’ve tried all options and need more help to reduce your dog’s anxiety, giving your dog a sedative might help. There will be times in the dog’s life when you simply can’t help them using the above tactics and a sedative is your best option. On such occasions, consider giving your dog PetSoothe’s Calm formula to help lessen unwanted behaviors, to lift your dog’s spirits, and to promote a calm and relaxed mood. Our Calm formula is a delicious, all-natural and organic peanut butter crunch flavored treat that contains valerian root and 10mg of organically certified CBD.
Sedatives for dogs? They can help to calm down a dog.
Dogs are like people in that we are all wired differently and we all have our own personalities. Some of us have calm demeanors while others are more energetic and outgoing. Regardless of our personalities, we all have triggers that upset us or put us in a bad mood. Our dogs are the same, except for the fact that they cannot literally tell us what might be on their mind or what is bothering them.
Let’s look at some of the common reasons why you need to consider giving your dog a sedative.
High Energy
Let’s face it. Some dogs just have too much energy. No matter how much they play or exercise their endless enthusiasm never seems to run out. Sedatives for dogs? They can help support healthy pain states in dogs.
There’s no question about the huge amount of love we feel for our dogs. I have said it before and I will say it again, a lot of people love their dogs more than some of their friends and even their family members. So, when it comes to your dog’s pain state, people naturally want the best for them – people simply want to make sure their dogs are healthy and happy. Topics often researched by dog owners are sedatives and natural pain relief options to help support their dog’s healthy pain states or provide them with temporary relief. After all, no dog parent wants to see their pet in pain.
Pain in Dogs
Frequently, when dogs are in pain, their owners give them a sedative to help manage their healthy pain states. The source of the pain can be from an accident or condition they have, or perhaps it is chronic pain that we are unaware of. The simpler diagnosis is when your dog has had surgery, been injured or is having mobility issues. This type of pain is easier to identify because we can see it clearly. It can be the lessor known internal issues that are causing your dog pain that are difficult to identify. These pains can manifest themselves by showing minor or no symptoms at all. For example, your dog may get a crusty nose because they are having digestive issues. Or a dog can have internal inflammation or morning stiffness that can indicate mobility issues. Sometimes a dog with this type of pain will be fine for part of the day, but then experience more pain later and become irritable or cranky.
No matter where the source of your dog’s pain, seeking a natural pain support option and something that provides temporary pain support can be helpful for your dog.
Things to try before giving a sedative
Unfortunately, there are not many things a dog owner can try on their pet before considering a sedative to treat their dog’s pain state. Things that work for anxiety, such as exercise or play, might have the opposite effect on the healing process. Ensuring your dog’s environment is supported with items such as ramps or cushion beds might also eventually fail to fully prevent pain.
Give your dog a sedative
When your dog is in pain and you’ve tried all the options to relieve it but it persists, giving your dog a sedative might be the last resort for help. It is always recommended that you first consult with your vet before giving your dog a sedative. Many vets are proponents of sedatives and other natural options. With your vet’s approval, consider giving your dog PetSoothe’s Calm formula to help lessen unwanted behaviors, to lift your dog’s spirits, and to promote a calm and relaxed mood. You can also try PetSoothe’s Joint Support to help support healthy pain states and healthy mobility. Our treats are made with all-natural, organic ingredients and contain organically certified CBD plus other added supplements to help support your dog.
Let’s face it – a dog that has been well trained is something we all strive for. A well-trained dog is a safe and more easily controlled dog because they have practiced an appropriate response to everyday commands and every day environmental situations. The more training a dog receives the better they will be able to handle known and unknown situations that we face. And the better our dogs are behaved the easier it will be for us to have control over them, especially during stressful events. While there is no overnight trick or magic method for training your dog, there are some helpful tips that can go a long way in giving your dog the tools and the confidence needed to be on their best behavior.
Keep their Daily Schedule the Same
Dogs are creatures of habit and like routine in their daily schedules. A consistent schedule provides structure for your dog and gives them the confidence they need to get through their day in a positive and happy mood. There are many moving parts to our day, and if you can try to keep your daily routine as consistent as possible, your dog will benefit greatly. Knowing what to expect is the key for a good day, so consider these pointers to help achieve consistency:
- Get up around the same time (weekends can be different)
- Do your morning dog walk around the same time
- Feed your dog breakfast around the same time
- Go to work around the same time (even if you work from home)
- Schedule the dog walker for the same time
- Get home from work around the same time
- Do your early evening dog walk around the same time
- Feed your dog dinner around the same time
- Go to bed around the same time
Of course, every day of your life can’t be Groundhog Day, but routine and structure don’t have to be complicated to implement and they can have such a big impact on your dog’s behavior.
Find the Proper Leash for your Dog
Dog leash innovation has come a long way. In addition to the various traditional neck collars available on the market, newer leash developments include options like body harnesses and gentle leaders. Depending on your dog’s behavior and preferences, you may choose to use any of these leash options to keep your dog happy and reacting properly to commands.
Traditional neck collar options include anything from different fabrics to different levels of training. For example, while some dogs respond well wearing vinyl neck collars, others might need a metal or even pronged collar while going through specific training exercises. Still, other dogs might prefer other neck collar materials such as leather.
Body harnesses are great for dogs who might be more sensitive to collars around their neck. Some dogs also just might respond better to wearing a body harness more so than wearing a neck collar. Body harnesses provide great support around the core of your dog, which can both make them feel more in control during training and make you feel more in control because you are effectively controlling a larger area than just the neck.
A gentle leader is a great training leash for dogs who are more stubborn to train. Gentle leaders are just that – they can lead your dog in the direction you want them to go while not using too much force. No jerking or tugging is required with a gentle leader and you have remarkable control when using this type of leash because it fastens around their snout and behind their head. Many dogs resist this type of leash at first and then quickly learn of its merits as they get more used to wearing it.
Start with the Basic Commands
Dogs are highly intelligent animals and are capable of some pretty amazing things. It’s no wonder experts say that dogs can learn between 150 and 250 words. When training your dog, it’s always best to start with the basics of training commands: sit, stay, down, come and heel. While these commands are the basic foundation for training your dog, mastering these commands is anything but basic.
Try to set aside one hour per day during your training period to keep the commands fresh and practice often. It’s through repetition that your dog will learn but try not to overdo it. Remember in college when you needed a study break? Dogs aren’t too different from us in that regard. Work hard with the proper training techniques and make sure not to work on it for too long if your dog is tired or has been training for a long time.
Reinforce Your Commands Often
Reinforcement is the key to training. Even after your initial training period, make sure to keep practicing all of the commands with your dog. You may find yourself using most of the foundation commands on a regular basis which will certainly help to reinforce all of your work. If any of the training commands or situational training that you implement are not used often, make sure to practice those at least once a month. Once your dog has mastered the foundation training, you are ready for the next phase of training, which can include more fun things like “fetch” and “play dead.”
Exercise your Dog Regularly
It’s no secret that a well-exercised dog is more likely to be better behaved than a dog with lots of pent-up energy inside. Not only is exercise important for your dog’s health and well-being, it is also important for their mental state. Just like we humans need exercise to be healthy both physically and mentally, our dogs do, too. In fact, a study in 2018 suggested that dogs’ bodies produce the same endorphins that we do after strenuous exercise, equating to the same “runner’s high” that we experience.
Try to exercise your dog every day and provide at least two days a week of more strenuous activity. There are a variety of ways to make exercising fun for your dog, so pick ones that are best for them – running, long walks, park play, set up a play date, hiking, swimming, obstacle course, food hide-and-seek and more.
Even with all of the training we can give them, our dogs are not always perfect. Sometimes they can use a little extra help, and in those cases, seeking the advice or training from a professional dog trainer is recommended. And in situations like 4th of July fireworks, thunderstorms or a bedtime routine gone bad, consider giving your dog a PetSoothe CBD treat to help.
There’s no question that as each new generation is born into the world our society as a whole adjusts and evolves. Did your parents ever say something to you like “when I was younger…” or “we never had that when I was your age” when you were a kid? That’s because as a society, we change and grow when new technologies and different ways of thinking are introduced.
Over the past few decades, we can certainly point to obvious society disruptors, like computers, mobile phones, 3-D printing, Wi-Fi, electric cars, social media and other technical advancements that have changed the way we live and the way we think about ourselves and about others.
Humans have reportedly been keeping dogs as domesticated pets since the end of the ice age, dating as far back as 11,000 years ago. So why all of a sudden are we changing the way we feel about and interact with our pet dogs?
The plain answer is simpler than you might think – It’s because we love them so much. But finding out why we love our pets more now than ever before and how this love has evolved into a whole new way that we care for our pets is what we want to explore.
Why More Love Now?
It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly why we have more love for our dogs now compared to years ago and our response always seems to narrow down not to one answer, but to one interesting concept: Humans are probably more stressed than ever before. Some factors include:
- The pace of life has gotten faster.
- We see an increased number of messages every day.
- We have our own stress, and now with things as social media and TV, we see other people’s stresses, which only adds to our existing stress.
- We work harder to make a living.
- We delay having children for our careers and financial gains.
- The cost of living continues to rise.
- The workforce is becoming more specialized, making it more difficult to change careers.
And while it is very fair to say that humans are stressed out at any point in time, the most recent shifts have resulted in a seismic shift in the way we view our pets.
Humans have to find ways to process and to deal with their stress and one way to do that is by creating a unique and meaningful bond with our dog. Dogs have so much unconditional love to give and to receive, making them the perfect human companion to help relieve stress. We love them so much that we consider our pets to be family. Let’s face it, sometimes we love our dogs more than we love family. There’s a reason a dog is called a person’s best friend (Yes, we changed that saying).
How the Love Manifests itself into Pet Care
When you consider your dog to be a member of the family naturally you are going to care for them as such. Long gone are the days of grocery store dog food and a trip to the vet once a year. Welcome to a new level of caring for your dog. Humans have gone through some incredible advancements in what we feed our bodies and how we take care of our bodies, so it’s no wonder we are seeking out the same for our four-legged family members.
Organic Dog Food and Treats
One of the ways we are starting to take better care of our dogs is through diet. As a society, we are much more conscious of what we put into our bodies, and as a result, more and more people are seeking out healthier and more natural foods for themselves and their dogs. For years now, food manufacturers have offered all-natural, organic, humanely raised, hormone-free, non-GMO or other alternatives to standard processed foods, so naturally, we project that onto our family member, the dog.
A great example of the humanization trend as it relates to organic dog food is the brand Nutrish, formerly owned and founded by celebrity chef, Rachel Ray, who is famous for being a chef who makes delicious and healthy food, obviously for humans. What she stands for as a brand – a nice, down-to-earth, practical and approachable person who cooks great, healthy food, is the perfect brand extension into the dog food category because that is exactly what people want for themselves and their dogs. Nutrish did so well it was sold in 2018 for $1.7 billion (that’s billion with a “b”) after only a couple of years in the market.
Integration into our Lifestyle
Dogs are such a part of our family that we are beginning to integrate their behaviors into our lifestyles in pretty cool ways. The following are some examples of those changes:
- Manufacturers are building dog-specific bathing tubs with features, like swinging doors, retractable hoses and special hair catchers – and we are infatuated. Just think, next time Fido splashes through a mud puddle, corralling him into the bath will be much easier on everyone.
- We all love home fashion trends and who doesn’t love custom-built furniture for our dogs? Everything from water bowls and beds built under a staircase to maximize space to a built-in just to hide dog toys, any way to hide clutter and maximize space is welcome in our home.
- Road trip! Since our dogs are family, we take them in the car with us on an errand or on a road trip. Automobile manufacturers have caught on and offer specialized dog features and accessories in order to appeal to these dog owners. Nissan, Chrysler, Volvo, Kia, Jeep, Tesla, Subaru, Mercedes – just about every car manufacturer is doing something small or big for dog owners. What’s next, a dog driven car? Just kidding.
- And speaking of traveling, many more hotels, rentals and even restaurants are allowing dogs as part of a strategy to attract more travelers and to provide a convenience to their guests. Let’s just hope your dog doesn’t snore!
Improved Pet Care Options
During the 2008-2009 recession almost every industry in the United States saw a decline in spending, but not the pet category. In fact, consumers cut back on spending on themselves before they were willing to cut back on spending on their pets. It’s all-out pooch pampering and we love it.
So, what are the dog parents spending their money on now that wasn’t available years ago?
Dog Walking/Pet Sitting/Day Care
Dog walkers, pet sitters and day cares have been in business for decades and are an integral piece of the infrastructure of the pet care industry. Think of them as professional caretakers for your family member while you cannot be there. In addition to great pet care, many of these businesses now provide 100% digital accountability for you and your pet by using software like PetCheck, which shows GPS maps of the walks and manages all of the dog’s pet care schedule and needs. Day care facilities offer video feed accessibility and a place for extended exercise. Many businesses will provide one-time or regular schedules to accommodate your needs.
Physical Rehabilitation
People have received physical therapy for decades, so why can’t our dogs? Well, now they do – and a lot of it. Dog-specific physical rehabilitation businesses are popping up across the United States. Most of them offer a combination of physical treatments and expanded services, such as hydrotherapy, treadmill and even acupuncture. They are great for dogs recovering from surgery or for dogs treating a medical condition, like muscle atrophy.
CBD Dog Treats
Consumers take CBD products to the tune of nearly $7 billion a year, and the category is expected to grow to almost $20 billion by 2024. The category is growing so rapidly because of CBD’s effectiveness to treat so many different conditions, and it follows closely along the healthy foods trend since CBD is an all-natural derivative from the hemp plant. And best of all, our dogs have the same exact endocannabinoid system that we do, so we already know that they will react to CBD the same way as us. CBD allows us to naturally treat conditions in our dogs and help to provide them with a better life.
PetSoothe uses only certified organic CBD oil in our dog treats. We create CBD treats for pet owners who are invested in making sure their pups are as happy as they can be. And we’re happy to report that some dog owners have seen positive results in their pets after giving them CBD. For more information about our products, please visit our product page today.
There are many factors that can contribute to an overweight pet. While many people think feeding a pet table food or table scraps is the main cause, weight issues are often caused by known and even unknown medical conditions your pet is facing.
The Association of Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) found in its clinical survey that 55.8% of dogs and 59.5% of cats are clinically overweight. Pet owners are obviously focused on making sure that food bowl is full and the pets are happy, but this comes with the side effect of obesity, which can lead to many health issues.
According to Veterinary Practice News, some of the most common health risks associated with pet obesity include:
- Inflammation
- Insulin resistance and diabetes
- Respiratory disease
- Cancer
- Kidney Disease
- High blood pressure
- Osteoarthritis
- Shorter life expectancy
For pet owners focused on providing a better quality of life for their furry family members, addressing weight issues has to be on the list of priorities.
The Right Amount of Food
The most common method for achieving weight loss is to reduce portion sizes (less calories). Exercise is the second most common weight loss remedy followed by offering pets lower-calorie foods and then foods with lower amounts of fat. The fourth most common means of achieving weight loss includes putting the pet on a prescription diet, usually one recommended by their veterinarian.
According to VCA Hospitals, a dog that is as little as five pounds overweight is at risk of developing medical conditions listed above, but putting your pet on a diet should only be done with the guidance of a veterinarian. Most veterinarians will make calculations on the animal’s ideal weight based on size and breed. Rather than putting them on a crash diet, vets shoot for no more than 3 to 5 percent body weight loss per month.
VCA says most dogs benefit by being fed diet foods several times a day, but each feeding includes an accurate calculation of calories so you will know where to make changes should the animal lose weight too fast or remain at the unhealthy weight.
Exercise
Have you been cutting back on your daily walks? Remember, it’s not only good for your dog – it’s also good for you. But rather than strolling at 20 to 25 minutes per mile, try taking a brisk 30-minute walk that gets the heart beating. Again, get the okay from your vet and make sure your health is also in check before you step into your workout clothes.
Tips for a healthier pup:
- Try to make a daily routine to ensure consistency
- Hire a dog walker
- Consider doggie daycare for additional exercise 4
- Set up a doggie playdate
Finally, play fetch more frequently with them. If they’ll chase after a laser pointer – go for it. Otherwise, any toy or stick that will get them active for 10 to 15 minutes at a time can help them expend calories.
At PetSoothe, we’re committed to assisted pet owners in providing a more healthful and happy life for their pets. We have developed a range of CBD treats to reach these goals, so ask your veterinarian about the positive effects of CBD. For more information, contact us today.
Given the volume of dogs euthanized each year, around 390,000 according to the ASPCA, the ethical choice for prospective dog owners is to acquire one from a local shelter. Not only are you helping to put a stop to animal cruelty in mass breeding operations, but you’re also saving a dog’s life. Another perk with adoption is that you’re opening up a space for another dog in need of shelter – one that will hopefully be adopted and become a furry member of a fortunate family.
At PetSoothe, we are 100 percent behind adopting dogs from shelters, but we’re also aware that there are responsible breeders who serve a purpose. If you’ve looked long and hard for a dog at shelters and rescue groups but haven’t found the one that fits your unique needs, going to a responsible breeder is an option.
Some prospective dog owners don’t have the knowledge or temperament to properly rehome a shelter dog with issues, so they research breeds and narrow them down based on everything from hypoallergenic properties to energy levels to temperament/personality. Once you’ve established which breed best suits your unique needs, the issue then becomes acquiring a puppy from a reputable breeder. The Humane Society and the American Kennel Club have valuable tips on identifying a breeder that is the polar opposite of a puppy mill owner:
- Ask for a referral from a veterinarian
Responsible breeders seek out the services of veterinarians, so vets have first-hand knowledge about breeders and how they operate. - Visit the breeder’s facilities to ensure the conditions are favorable for the dogs
Breeders who treat their dogs like they’re part of the family will not enclose them in a kennel or small fenced-in areas all day. - Good breeders value tradition over trends
Rather breeding a hybrid that can introduces numerous health issues, a good breeder will never deviate from a breed standard. This ensures the dogs are physically and behaviorally healthy. - They have documented health testing for breed-specific issues that go back generations
Puppy mills are notorious for selling dogs that come from parents that have known breed-specific health issues. Responsible breeders know what to look for and will only breed dogs that are healthy and free of issues, such as hip dysplasia. - Reputable breeders require a contract
The contract you sign, in many cases, will stipulate that if you are going to give up the dog, it must be returned to the breeder, so you’re not contributing to the rescue problem. - A responsible breeder will not have multiple pairs of breeding dogs
Again, these dogs are also pets, so no responsible breeder is going to have a multitude of mating pairs and they limit the number of litters, typically only one per year. - They ask many questions of prospective dog owners
Rather than introduce a puppy to a bad environment, responsible breeders ensure the situation at the prospective owner’s home is suitable for the dog, and some will even request a home visit. - They will refer you to past clients
An ethical breeder has nothing to hide and will refer you to people who have bought from them in the past. - Meet the puppy’s parents
The best breeders will have the breeding pair (but especially the mom) on site and you will be able to meet them.
The best-case-scenario is to find your new best friend at a shelter. The debate over breeder vs. shelter can get heated, and potential dog owners can be quite conflicted about this. For those who want more predictability in the personality and health of their dog and decide on going to a breeder, do everything in your power to ensure you’re not supporting puppy mills by purchasing a dog from a responsible breeder.
According to the ASPCA, around 2 million dogs are adopted from shelters every year. That’s a lot of dogs entering new homes where everything is new. And while the home environment is more pleasant than what dogs experience in a shelter, it can still be a challenge getting settled in. Petfinder has loads of useful tips on how to acclimate a canine to the household. At PetSoothe, we’ve formulated a product that could help in situations like these. Calm, a peanut butter crunch-flavored CBD treat formulated for dogs, promotes a calm and relaxed mood.
As more and more people become vaccinated and as students complete their schooling for the year, travel is on the minds of many who have hunkered down throughout the pandemic and are ready escape the confines of the home and hit the road. Your dog(s), being part of the family and definitely more accustomed to being in near constant contact with your human family over the past 14-plus months, are eager to join you in your travels. We’ve got tips for you to make vacationing with a pet more enjoyable, even during non-COVID times.
Air Travel
Travel can be stressful for dogs, especially if they’re on a flight and have to be crated in the cargo hold. Most airlines allow small dogs in the cabin as long as their carrier fits under the seat in front of you, but that can be stressful, too. Not all dogs are good candidates for the airport and airline experience, so if there is the slightest chance your dog might be traumatized, reconsider your vacation plans. But if you’re certain your dog is a prime candidate for this type of travel, consider the following for a stress-free trip:
- Buy a cozy carrier, one that has plenty of padding and will be comfortable for your dog to lounge and sleep in. You can also add your own padding or blankets if the one you buy doesn’t include them.
- Get your dog accustomed to the carrier. Practice at home weeks before the flight to ensure they’re completely at ease in it.
- Exercise your dog(s) prior to the flight. This will tire them out and make them more prone to sleep during the flight.
- Limit food and water in the hours leading up to the flight and make sure they have plenty of chances to take potty breaks before entering the airport.
- Does your dog respond well to thunder shirts, also known as anxiety wraps? About 80 percent of dogs do, so if yours is one of them, bundle them up before they enter the plane.
With ample pre-planning and preparation, your flight with your dog should go off without a hitch.
Car Travel
Most dogs love riding in cars. They experience new sights and smells, and best yet – they get to be with their human companions. Be sure to give them plenty of exercise just prior to embarking on the trip, as this will help them settle down and avoid the urge to be a rambunctious (annoying) traveler. Consider these tips as well:
- Safety belting
In the unfortunate event of a car crash, ensure your dog’s safety by installing a safety belt that will keep him/her from becoming a projectile. This will also prevent injury in a hard brake situation, and it will keep a feisty pup from jumping out of an open window. - Motion sickness
Just like humans, dogs can experience motion sickness in cars, which is probably one of the main issues dog owners face when traveling with their pet. To make your travel more comfortable for you and your pup, make sure they are able to see out the window, perhaps even a front-facing view. This helps reduce a motion sickness trigger. Also, limit food consumption prior to a ride, as this will help to reduce the chance of an upchuck. - Car ramps
For dogs that have mobility issues, getting them into the car might be a hassle, especially if they are heavy. There are several options for a situation like this, ranging from ramps to steps that give your pup an easy way in and out of a vehicle. - Plan for Bathroom Breaks
Study the route to your destination and plan on hitting the rest stops along the way so you don’t have to make any emergency roadside stops. Rest stops are a great place to give your pup a chance to stretch their legs and blow off pent up energy.
Also, to keep your pup entertained, take chew treats and toys, which will help them vent built-up tension or stave off boredom while on the road.
Pack Smart
Food, water, feeding/drinking bowls, medicine, toys and collars/leashes/harnesses should all be thought about prior to your trip, and perhaps even packed in a bag specifically for all dog-related items. Also consider packing pet grooming wipes and a pad or bed resting and sleeping.
To save space, consider collapsible water and food bowls. The best ones are BPA-free and made with a lead-free silicone that are considered food-grade and safe to put in the dishwasher. If you’re worried about food bowls becoming tainted, stainless steel is the safest material because it is so easy to thoroughly clean and it is also dishwasher safe.
Keeping your dog hydrated on the trip, especially if you’re doing plenty of outdoor activities, will be much easier with water bottles made specifically for dogs. These bottles include a reservoir at the end where water pools and be easily accessed by the dog.
Destinations
No doubt you’ve put plenty of thought into what you want to do with your family while on your trip, but don’t forget to plan some fun for Fido. Trails, hiking, the beach, mountains and large parks where water is plentiful are all great destinations for the entire group.
Expedia recently identified some of the more dog-friendly cities that would make perfect vacation destinations. For example, if you are determined to be oceanside, go to San Diego and enjoy “Dog Beach” where off-leash areas are plentiful. Also, San Diego has more than 500 dog-friendly restaurants.
Austin, Tex., is another popular destination due to its 500-plus dog-friendly restaurants. There’s also Austin Doga, which is yoga class you can take with your dog. There’s even a water park called “Barkin’ Springs” that caters to dogs on the hot summer days.
If you’re more inclined to travel eastward, consider Alexandria, Va., where aside from 20 fenced and unfenced dog parks, you can walk down the historic streets of the colonial downtown area and see bowls of water out for dogs, as well as treats. Fortunately, if Mount Vernon is on your list of things to do, it is dog friendly. For more cities on Expedia’s list, check out the blog here.
Lodging
One valuable resource you should consider is a website called BringFido. This site allows you to enter a destination, dates, the number of people and pets to generate a list of pet-friendly places. The site will also list pet fees associated with your stay.
- Make sure you’re familiar with the pet rules established by your motel, hotel or Airbnb, VRBO, Home Exchange or other rentals.
- Make sure your dog is vaccinated and has the proper paperwork should you be required to give proof. For example, if you’re crossing the border into Canada, you will be required to show a valid rabies vaccination certificate.
- Always leash your dog unless you’re in a designated leash-free area. This is especially important in high traffic areas such as gas station.
- Bring extra bedding. Many lodging places have rules about pets on furniture, so be sure to cover couches or beds where your dog might lounge.
- Rather than leaving your pet to its own devices at your place of lodging while you’re out and about, plan pet-friendly activities and day trips to places you’ll enjoy that also allow dogs.
As you plan your trip, ask your veterinarian about CBD supplements. Getting your pet started on a CBD regimen prior to a trip can help them adjust to the supplement and begin to see the benefits that many pet owners have attested to, including easing stress and a variety of other perks. At PetSoothe, we’re excited to get back on the road and see the sights we missed so much over the pandemic. We’re also focused on making sure your pets are as comfortable as possible, so consider our CBD dog treats today.
Our dogs can sometimes amaze us. Sure, we train them as puppies to follow typical commands and to behave in certain ways, which makes us proud pet parents when they get it. But sometimes they seem to go off script and behave in surprisingly intelligent ways or connect with us on an emotional level that indicates a deep relationship. For example, have you ever yawned and shortly afterward your dog yawns, too? Or how about the times when you feel like you really need a hug and your dog comes up and snuggles you?
In the smarts department, the average dog is capable of learning 165 words. That seems impressive unless your dog is a border collie named Chaser. In 2004, Chaser displayed a knowledge of 1,022 words, a feat that took his owner three years to establish through naming Chaser’s extensive collection of toys. Check out this video to see Chaser in action.
But what about more complex interactions, like when you accidentally step on your pup’s paw or tail? Do they actually know you didn’t mean to hurt them? A new study seems to support the fact that dogs can distinguish between intentional and unintentional action. In the study, researchers created a scenario where they intentionally held treats or accidentally dropped them to see how the dogs would react. What they found is that dogs reacted differently depending on the condition.
The more socialized a dog is, the better able they are to react to communicative cues in humans. Not only do they pay close attention to where we look or point, they’re also assessing how humans interact with each other, which means they can understand, to some degree, human perspectives. But to really unlock your pup’s cognitive abilities, realizing that a majority of their experiences are scent-based can be a big help. Dr. Alexandra Horowitz and Dr. Charlotte Duranton from the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College, Columbia University, published their findings from a study in a paper called “Let me sniff! Nosework induces positive judgement bias in pet dogs.” The highlights from their study show that practicing “nosework” (a dog sport used to mimic professional detection, aka scent work or scent detection) allows dogs to express natural behavior and be more autonomous, increase their optimism and their overall animal welfare.
Our dogs are empathetic and smart, but are there other animals equally or more impressive when it comes to intelligence? Check out the brains on these animals.
Crows
By some accounts, crows are intelligent as a seven-year-old human. They’ve been known to use traffic to help the open nuts and have even solved puzzles. One study on six wild crows investigated causal relationships. Scientists developed a series of tasks for the crows to manage, including one where the crows gained access to water in a pitcher by placing rocks in it until the water rose to a reachable level.
Crows can remember human faces and hold grudges against us, should we do something they perceive as a threat. They have the vocal capacity to tell other crows how threatening someone is. A 2019 BBC article found that crows might be smarter than some primates. Scientists at Oxford University studies a crow they named Betty and found that it was able to take a piece of wire, bend it so that it had a hooked tail and use it as a tool to gain access to a container of meat. Other evidence suggests that this type of tool-making behavior has been witnessed in crows in the wild quite extensively.
Pigs
If you have known or heard of someone living with a domesticated pig and thought they’re crazy – think again. Bacon lovers are going to hate hearing this, but pigs are sentient beings that are capable of experiencing loneliness, frustration and joy. One researcher at Purdue found that pigs are fast learners and pick up “novel things quite quickly and quite well.” They can also display dog-like behavior, like when they are greeted by one of their family members, they will let out a happy squeal and roll over so they can receive a belly rub.
An article in Psychology Today addresses a study on pigs’ cognition, emotion and personality and found that they are “cognitively complex” and share traits with other animals that are considered intelligent. “They understand the use of pointing and other indicating actions by humans,” one researcher said.
Elephants
An elephant’s brain is roughly three times larger than a human brain. Considering that the average human weighs less than 2 percent of that of an African elephant, the size of the brain might seem a little trivial, but consider that elephants are known for their exceptional memories, empathy and expressing emotion. In 2012, an Asian elephant named Koshik matched the voice pitch of his Korean trainers and could be heard saying five words in Korean. While it’s not believed Koshik understood what the words meant, it is considered his way of bonding with his trainers.
They have been recorded “mourning” their deceased family and heard members, rocking back and forth, pushing at deceased elephants and later smelling and carrying their bones. A conservation biologist said in a National Geographic article that this behavior is “not based on survival or necessity, but based on some sort of emotion.”
Dolphins
Another big-brained mammal is the dolphin, which is actually in line with the brain-to-body ratio of humans. They communicate through a series of clicks and whistles and via body language. What’s interesting about the brains of dolphins is that they contain spindle neurons, which are associated with skills such as communication, reasoning, recognition, remembering and problem-solving. It’s not uncommon for lone dolphins to get incredibly close to human swimmers. There are tales of this happening around the globe – dolphins swimming under humans, jumping over them and taking belly rubs (which is not a recommended act). A dolphin in Ireland named Fungie by locals has drawn tourists to the town of Dingle for three decades, apparently living alone in the harbor and frequently interacting with humans.
If play is an expression of intelligence, dolphins certainly have it. Researchers have witnessed dolphins swimming in pods, doing back flips, leaping and tumbling, and believe this is behavior associated with pure social enjoyment. They’ve also witnessed them nudging other dolphins – a sign that one wants to play – at which point they will take to a game of high-speed pursuit and maybe even play catch with a sea turtle, fish or other food source.
At PetSoothe, we’re also focused on animal welfare – particularly the welfare of your dog. Our line of CBD dog treats is built on a recipe to help support animal health. Let us know what kind of blogs you’d like to see next and keep an eye out for new products from PetSoothe.
At PetSoothe, we focus on using all natural and organic ingredients, including organic CBD, because we want our product to be the best it can be. The result is that your dog gets top-quality, great-tasting treats. In fact, we source our CBD from a family-owned, organically certified hemp farm in Fort Collins, Colorado. And, our CBD dog treats contain more than just CBD. We add supplements like turmeric and valerian root along with a variety of active and inactive healthy ingredients. We have two types of treats for dogs, including Joint Support Chicken and Sweet Potato and Calm Peanut Butter Crunch treats. Each contains 10 mg of organic, full-spectrum CBD oil from CO2 distillate extract.
The following list of products includes the active and inactive ingredients in our Calm Peanut Butter Crunch dog treats, which promote a calm and relaxed mood, lift your dog’s spirits and lessen unwanted behaviors.
Valerian Root
Valerian root is an herb used in a variety of products for its mild sedative effect and for nervous tension and insomnia. Valerian root is native to Europe and Asia, but it is also grown in the U.S. It acts as a natural GABA regulator, which is a chemical messenger that helps regulate nerve impulses in the brain and nervous system.
Eggs
Organic eggs are an important ingredient. A study from Penn State’s College of Agriculture Sciences shows that they contain around twice as much omega-3 fatty acids and higher percentages of vitamins E and A, which are beneficial to your dog.
Peanut Butter
The organic peanut butter we use is produced without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. While most dogs love the taste of peanut butter, they’re getting the added benefit of healthy fats, protein, fiber and potassium.
Whole Wheat Flour
Rather than use a highly-processed white flour, which is devoid of the most nutrient-rich parts, we use organic whole wheat flour. This is important because whole wheat flour includes bran and germ, which are the nutritious parts of the grain. Whole wheat flour also contains vitamins and minerals and is also a source of protein and fiber.
As PetSoothe continues to expand on its line of CBD dog treats, we will maintain our commitment to using the finest quality ingredients to ensure your dog(s) get more than just a tasty snack – they get healthy treats that they’ll be excited to be eat on a daily basis.
Our Joint Support Chicken and Sweet Potato treats support healthy mobility, comfort and activity levels and lessen morning stiffness. The following is the list of ingredients and descriptions of each.
Glucosamine Sulfate (Shellfish)
Cartilage, which is the tissue that cushions joints, has a natural compound in it called glucosamine. Glucosamine sulfate, sourced from shellfish, is widely used to support joint health. Glucosamine has been used by humans for years to treat osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Turmeric
You might be familiar with turmeric because it is used in many curry powders, but this common spice is also known for its use in treating many ailments. Turmeric is a plant in the ginger family and contains the chemical curcumin. As an antioxidant, curcumin helps to maintain healthy pain states in the body. Turmeric has been used in Asian medicine for many years to treat a variety of illnesses, mainly because of its antioxidant effects.
Cassava Flour
Cassava is a starch tuber that is grated to make flour. It’s often used as a substitute for wheat flour and gluten-free foods. Cassava flour is a low-calorie ingredient and is also low in fat and sugar, but is rich in vitamin C, making it a healthful inactive ingredient in our treats.
Chicken Paste
An ingredient that will make your dog crave our treats is chicken paste. While it might not sound particularly tasty to humans, it’s the ingredient that adds tons of flavor but has the added benefit of protein that all dogs require.
Coconut Flour
Rich in fiber, protein and MCTs, coconut flour is a gluten-free ingredient that can help promote stable blood sugar, heart health and proper digestion. While many coconut products are high in saturated fats (the bad fat), when coconut flour is processed, this saturated fat is removed. Also, this flour contains more fiber and protein than wheat flour.
Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes are highly nutritious. They contain fiber, vitamins and minerals, but they’re really known for their vitamin A content, which is known for benefiting the immune system and eyesight. When dogs are deficient in vitamin A, their skin and coat will not look healthy, but they can also suffer from night blindness if deficient enough.
Potassium Sorbate
This chemical additive is widely used as a preservative in food. It is odorless and imparts no taste to food – it’s simply used, in extremely small quantities, as a preservative.
As PetSoothe continues to expand on its line of CBD dog treats, we will maintain our commitment to using the finest quality ingredients to ensure your dog(s) get more than just a tasty snack – they get healthy treats that they’ll be excited to be eat on a daily basis.
Being a “senior dog” is relative to the dog’s breed, but also its physical wellness. Small dogs that have relatively long lifespans compared to giant breeds hit the “senior” designation at around 10-12 years of age, while medium-size dogs welcome that moniker at age 8 or 9. Larger dogs hit the senior milestone perhaps as early as 6.
Reaching the golden years isn’t without its challenges. Some senior dogs don’t handle stress as well as they once did. It’s not uncommon for their hearing to go bad, and that once keen sense of vision begins to fade. They also have a tougher time regulating their temperature. One of the big aging milestones you’ll really notice is that the pup that once had limitless energy is now having mobility issues due to sore joints and seems content to sit still or show signs of difficulty getting up.
At PetSoothe, we’ve taken some of these elder ailments into account in developing our Senior Support salmon and oatmeal CDB treats for senior dogs. These treats support healthy mobility, healthy digestion and brain function. The following are the key ingredients for offering these levels of support.
Salmon Oil
Bringing salmon oil into the mix is essential, as fish oil is one of the most popular products sought out by pet owners. You’ve likely heard of healthy fat, which is the type of fat bodies use for energy, protecting organs and supporting cell growth. Fish oil contains healthy fat compounds called docosahexaenoic (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic (EPA) fatty acids, which are collectively referred to as Omega 3 fatty acids.
Among the list of potential benefits pets could gain from consumption of salmon oil includes lower triglyceride (harmful cholesterol) levels, improved cognitive function, improve heart health, slow kidney disease, improve skin conditions and aid arthritic joints.
Glucosamine
It’s estimated that roughly one in five dogs will develop a joint issue at some point in their lives, though it’s most seen in senior dogs. One of the keys to a happy life is mobility, which is why we have included glucosamine in our Senior Support CBD treats.
Glucosamine is one of the most common supplements used to support dogs with osteoarthritis. It is a naturally occurring compound that is known as a “chondroprotective agent” used for its potential in alleviating pain related to joint problems. Glucosamine has also been used to intervene and slow the onset of arthritis.
Probiotics
Probiotics are bacteria in the gut that promote health. Billions of them live in your dog’s gut and help them fight infection, digest food and process nutrients. Furthermore, probiotics help to make the immune system do its job.
If you’ve taken probiotics for your own potential health benefits, you might have gotten them from a dairy product, such as yogurt. Dairy products are a leading cause of food intolerance in canines, which is why it’s important that at PetSoothe, we use lactose-free probiotics in Senior Support.
Turmeric
A doctor at the Harvard-affiliated Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases referred to inflammation as the “smolder process that injures your tissues, joints, and blood vessels.” Supporting healthy inflammation in a natural way includes using turmeric, which is a spice commonly used in Indian food. And while you might enjoy it in your tikka masala, it’s more and more commonly being used for its potential to fight inflammation.
Turmeric is often referred to as a “natural superfood,” and it’s admired as much for its medicinal properties as it is for its taste. While there are a host of potential benefits cited in consuming turmeric, the top one is supporting healthy inflammation levels. It’s believed that the compound in turmeric called curcumin is where this spice gets its ability to perform its superfood powers.
